Brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, along with their cousin Mike Love and Brian's school classmate Al Jardine, vocalized together often as teenagers, imitating pop vocal groups like the Four Freshmen.
California natives except for Jardine, the five rented musical instruments and learned them well enough to record "Surfin',"  a novelty tune meant to capitalize on the burgeoning surfing craze.
It did well enough regionally to prompt Capitol to sign the boys.
(Only Dennis actually surfed.)

#1 Percy Faith - A Theme From A Summer Place
In 1962, the group took off nationally with "Surfin' Safari," and soon parlayed that success into a number of songs about sun, surf, and girls. Brian, who had been studying Phil Spector's studio  productions, soon began writing and producing much of the group's material. The result was one of the few American acts who could hold their own, creatively and commercially, with the Beatles and the rising British Invasion.

In 1966, the group peaked with two masterworks: the Pet Sounds album and the single "Good Vibrations."

Linda
Barbara Ann
Jan Berry and Dean Torrence first became friends on the football team at L.A.'s University High.  It wasn't until 1963, with the release of their Four Seasons-inspired "Linda," that the Jan and Dean sound began to take shape. After meeting the Beach Boys, Jan befriended leader Brian Wilson, and the two began work on what would become "Surf City." Inspired by the local surf scene and Wilson's hits, "Surfin'" and "Surfin' Safari"  -- it went straight to # 1.
The duo flourished well into the mid-Sixties, weathering even the British Invasion. But on April 12, 1966, Berry's Stingray slammed into a parked gardener's truck (not at the site mentioned in "Dead Man's Curve," despite legend), and Jan entered a decade-long nightmare of physical recovery, drug abuse, and depression. By the mid-Seventies, amazingly, Berry could perform almost at normal, and the duo began an amazing comeback that lasted well into the mid-Eighties.
Jan Berry passed away in 2004.
1960 - Summer of Innocence
Summertime 1960 was the end of the 50s and the end of the age of innocence. To me it was Palisades Park, the debut of The Twist, and the inncocent Brian Hyland hit "Yellow Polka Dot Bikini." From then on, it was all downhill.
The Top Tune was Percy Faith's lush Theme From A Summer Place.

1967 - Summer of Love
Summertime is a special time for Classic Rock fans. Outdoor festivals, weekends at the beach, memories of youthful summers danced away to a rock beat.
The prevailing social and cultural upheaval, and the growing divide between hippies and anybody over age  30,  the summer of 1967 came to be known as the Summer of Love.

Rock music in the summer of '67 reflected the growing conflict in Viet Nam, the drug experimentation of the counterculture, and the ongoing civil rights struggles. The primary influence was the burgeoning West Coast "flower power" movement; Groups like The Byrds, The Turtles and Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention were defining the Los Angeles rock scene. San Francisco contributed Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and Jefferson Airplane.

1969 – Summer of Woodstock
The Monterey Festival two summers earlier may have been the first major rock festival,  but the Woodstock Music and Art Fair was the largest and most famous.  The three-day festival on a farm in Sullivan County, New York
(a good 40 miles away from the town of Woodstock) in August, 1969 became the peak of the drug-influenced counterculture lifestyle.

1970 - Summer of Discontent
Perhaps the single most significant influence on the mood of the country – and of rock music – in the summer of 1970 was the killing, by National Guardsmen, of four Kent State University students who were part of a protest of the U.S. invasion of Cambodia during the Viet Nam war. The incident inspired Neil Young to write "Ohio," which became one of Crosby Stills Nash & Young’s most famous songs, even though it was initially banned by some radio stations because of its controversial lyrics.

1972 - Summer of Transition
The summer of '72 saw the debut albums of groups that would go on to define rock for the rest of the decade and beyond.  In June, The Eagles burst into the national consciousness with their self-titled first album.  Steely Dan was in the process of recording Can’t Buy A Thrill, its debut album which was ultimately certified gold. David Bowie changed the face of Glam Rock and Heavy Metal with The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust.

Brother Rick's favorite:
"Walking on Sunshine" (1985)
by Katrina & the Waves
Southern-Style Beach Music, Dancin' The Shag
Two bands stand out when talking about shag:  the Chairmen of the Board and the Tams.

You may know the first band from their 1970 hit "Give Me Just A Little More Time" and the latter from their 1962 hit "What Kind Of Fool Do You Think I Am" (later covered by Bill Deal and the Rhondells in a more uptempo version that's also prized amongst the east coast beach bar shaggers).

This kind of slow and sexy soul set the stage for the shag music genre, but other later (and earlier!) hits also qualify.
Here are some of the big shag hits:
• Billy Ward and the Dominos,             "Sixty Minute Man"
• The Platters, "With This Ring"
• The O'Kaysions, "Girl Watcher"
• Lil' Bob and the Lollipops,                  "I Got Loaded"
• The Showman, "39-21-46"
• Willie Tee, "Teasin' You"
• Bruce Channel, "Hey! Baby"
• The Foundations,
  "Build Me Up Buttercup"
Some will tell you that true shaggers will only shag to bands these days, not DJs or radio stations.  The Fantastic Shakers, The Embers,  The Holiday Band, The Band of Oz, The Catalinas, and The Men of Soul are all big names on the shag circuit that play at the clubs here on Oak Island and the surrounding Myrtle Beach bars.
The two biggest annual events on the shag  calendar happen, naturally, in South Myrtle Beach, SC, and those are the Spring Safari  and the Fall Migration.  For a full list of other national shag events, visit shagdance.com.

Funding shortfall endangers Long Island summer concerts:
A Long Island arts nonprofit that brought such acts as Boz Scaggs and Kenny G to the North Shore has suspended its long-running and popular summer concert series, and likely will cancel it entirely unless it receives a sudden infusion of money from donors.
Planting Fields Arboretum
Here is the official set of American Idol 2010’s summer tour dates featuring this season’s Top 10 singers: Aaron Kelly, Andrew Garcia, Casey James, Crystal Bowersox, Didi Benami, Katie Stevens,
Lee DeWyze, Michael Lynche, Siobhan Magnus, and Tim Urban when they come to a town near you.
There have been major changes to the "American Idol Live: 2010" tour, according to a revised schedule released by tour organizer Live Nation.
Seven dates have been canceled, and show dates have been move up in a number of other cities.
The canceled stops include Omaha, Neb.; Kansas City, Mo.; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Toronto; Buffalo, N.Y.; and Cleveland.
Shows have been moved up in cities such as Hartford; Des Moines, Iowa; Minneapolis; Chicago; and Toledo, Ohio.
While Live Nation declined to give an official reason for the changes, the tour has been hit with a slump in ticket sales. The reason are varied, but the overall live concert market is weak this summer. Also, there is a perception among man "Idol" fans that this season's lineup was weaker than normal.
